Lesson

She who depends on him
to take her out for ice cream
remains hungry.
And that’s the story of my life.

Have you ever

Over the phone today.
I: Have you ever felt this way two days before a test? That you knew the information one week ago but now you have forgotten it?
Mo: No, I feel that I never knew it in the first place!

On hold

I feel like my life is on hold until I take the big test on Friday.
I have so many things to take care of: start my residency application packet, write a personal statement, choose the residency programs I will apply to, get my wardrobe ready for the interviews, discard the clothes I don’t wear anymore, [...]

The kababs I fried…

… are jet black on one side and raw on the other. Maybe I will split them in half and see if there’s something in the middle, in the middle.
I refuse to cook anything until after the test :|

I heard this song by Tommy Page and love it!
Life is full of lots of up and downs,
And the distance feels further when you’re headed for the ground,
And there is nothing more painful than to let you’re feelings take you down,
It’s so hard to know the way you feel inside,
When there’s many thoughts and feelings [...]

Less than four days

With less than four days left for the big test on Friday, I am freaking out. And I am super hungry for something delicious. Mom has been on my case for not eating the food in my freezer. I have eaten all the frozen food that I liked, and now all I have left are [...]

I read in Lucia’s eyes by Arthur Japin a few months ago. I wanted to write about in some detail because it reminded me of so many things that happened to me twelve years ago. However, the book is now due at the library and I have to return it today. The story is about [...]

It’s only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth-and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up-that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had. — Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

There is an interfaith chapel in the hospital. Sometimes I go there to read the Quran. Sometimes I read the prayerbook in which people, mostly patients or their families, write their prayers to God. Some time last year, C & I were exiting the cafeteria when I took him there. We occasionally went there together, [...]

Paul and I

Walking to school, over the bridge, I noticed an African American man sitting on the edge. I didn’t take much notice. On my way back home at 3pm, I saw the same man. I was not happy as I am truly unsatisfied with the way my life is running nowadays. As I passed by him, [...]

Heights in order

Today we sent Haiqa out to get us some goodies from Baskin Robins. Mo asked for a mango blast shake, Haiqa got a mint chocolate chip shake, and I vanilla ice cream. As Haiqa lay them out on the kitchen counter, she noticed, “We all got something according to our heights!”

I watched my second Iranian film today, the color of paradise. As the film began, I was surprised to see its title in Farsi, rang-e-Khoda, which translates to ‘the color of God’. It is the story of a blind boy (the actor is blind in his real life!) who goes to an institute for the [...]

They say that a good thing never lasts
And then it has to fall
Those are the the people that did not
Amount to much at all
Give me the baseline and I’ll shake it
Give me a record and I’ll break it
There’s no beginning and no ending
Give me a chance to go and I’ll take it
Don’t stop me [...]

One a day

The one a day women’s vitamins are not for me. I rarely remember to take them, and when I do, they make me nauseated. The last time I took those vitamins, I was on surgery, walking to the hospital at 5am and swore I would discard the bottle after I returned home. I didn’t. Today [...]

I read a translation of the book of Joseph and Zuleikha by Maulana Jami, the 15th century Persian sufi poet. I knew parts of the story from the Qur’an and from the cartoon king of dreams.
Joseph, son of Jacob, lives in Kan’an. He is the youngest and the handsomest of twelve brothers. Eleven are stepbrothers [...]

Words of wisdom

I: Mama, do you want to share with me any words of wisdom before you leave?
Mom: Be happy no matter what
I: Can I quote you on my blog?
Mom: Yes… Stay positive no matter what.
I: Mo, how about you?
Mo: What? Wisdom?
I: Yes
Mo: Do whatever you want
I: That’s wisdom?
Mo: Yes
